A small study was recently completed by ConsumerWorld.org to analyze the use of prescription drug cards. Founder Edgar Dworsky obtained five prescription drug cards from various groups and compared the coverages and prices of each discount card. Cards were obtained from AAA, AARP, the National League of Cities, UNA Rx and Simple Savings. National League of Cities, UNA Rx, and Simple Savings happen to be completely free cards that can be accessed online. Dworsky then took the cards to three different pharmacies including CVS, Costco, and an independent company. He compared prices for four of the commonly used prescription drugs including two brand name and two generic which is covered by Elisabeth Leamy on ABCNews. The results were surprising to say the least, but a little confusing.

Dworsky reported that his savings ranged from 0% to 71% depending on the pharmacy and the discount card that was used. On average, he saved about 16% on medications. Not only did costs vary greatly, but when the popular cholesterol drug, Simvastatin, was priced at Costco he found that the chain’s regular price was much lower than any other discounted prices received at the other pharmacies. Consumer Reports has declared Costco the best overall deal in previous surveys especially if their own discount card is used. Costco stands out since anyone can get a prescription filled there, even if they have not paid the membership fee. This is important information for consumers to know as they are bombarded with various discount offers on prescriptions.

The bottom line that came out of this comparison is that it is worth it to get a drug discount card if you do not have prescription drug coverage. This is especially true when looking at the free cards which can end up saving you a lot of money, especially if you are buying the same drug over and over. It’s definitely a challenge to determine which card is best for you because each one offered different benefits at various prices depending on your store of choice. It’s definitely worth it to do your own research if you buy prescription drugs regularly to determine which card will save you the most amount of money.

Once you have compared the various options, you can choose the card that saves you the most money on your particular drug at your particular pharmacy. Dworsky found that the free prescription drug cards offered better deals than some of the cards that cost money, so it’s no problem to stock up. If you have multiple medications, mix and match your cards to get you the biggest overall discount. It seems like a lot of research but it can be worth it if your are buying drugs often. The savings can really add up over time and you only have to do this research periodically to ensure your savings are consistent.
