New Plan From Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield introduced their new Deductible Credit Program for select individual health insurance products which include their SmartSense and Premier plans.  The press release on the BCBS website talks about the reasons behind starting this unique plan.

Simply put, BCBS was trying to devise a plan that would appeal to their customers and meet their individual needs.  More Missouri residents are interesting in more affordable health insurance plans for basic health care services and they are looking to save money on coverage for their entire family.  Since many consumers do not reach their deductible, Anthem thought this new plan would be applicable to many in need.

The Deductible Credit Program offers eligible subscribers who have not met their health insurance deductibles in the previous year can receive a credit that can be applied to their current year deductible.  This can ultimately lower the out-of-pocket costs for consumers and give them more opportunity to be prepared for medical emergencies.  Once a customer is deemed eligible, a Special Incentive Account is automatically set up and Anthem will credit up to 20% of deductibles that were not met the previous year.  This is a unique plan that should prove to be very popular with Missouri consumers.

Easier Health Insurance for Independent Contractors

Independent contractors and freelance workers have always struggled to find the right health insurance for their needs.  They struggle finding affordable policies as well as health insurance options with quality benefits.  Many independent contractors choose to go on their spouse’s insurance plan or go without health insurance at all.  Some good news for these individuals though.  The Freelancers Union will be receiving $341 million in loans from the US government to start health insurance plans in three states based on Alex Wayne’s article on Bloomberg.com.

Companies such as UnitedHealth Group INC, WellPoint INC, and Blue Cross will be competing for offerings starting in 2014.  Marilyn Tavenner, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said the programs are called co-op plans and they will promote competition in the health insurance arena.  It’s a new way to respond to the health insurance needs of those who do not carry traditional health insurance policies.

The Freelancers Union is a non-profit group created to represent independent contractors and freelance workers in America.  They offer 401k options, health insurance, and life insurance coverage for their 171,000 members according to their website.  Members and non-members will be able to access these new health insurance options in New York, New Jersey and Oregon and the organization expects to cover about 200,000 individuals over the course of five years.  Sara Horowitz, the group’s executive director, compared this to venture capital for health care that will support thousands of people needing health insurance support.

The Individual Mandate: Exclusive Report

HealthInsuranceSort.com has come out with an exclusive report on the individual health insurance mandate and its effect on health care reform.  The individual mandate has been an intense debate in Congress for years now and it doesn’t seem the concerns are going to go away any time soon.

Many find that a mandate requiring most Americans to carry a health insurance policy is unfair and ineffective, but President Obama and his administration passed this bill to ensure all Americans have access to quality health care.  The Affordable Care Act aims to make health insurance more affordable since more healthy people will be paying in to help pay for the sick.

Check out this report from HealthInsuranceSort for more information on how the individual mandate is going to affect health insurance overall.

UPMC Sees Increase In Enrollment

Medicare Advantage plans at UPMC Health Plan increased at a high rate over 2011 and this is evidence that seniors are looking for insurance alternatives through UPMC.  The subsidiary of Pittsburgh hospital system UPMC stated that membership in its six Medicare Advantage products was up 13.6% for 2011 enrollment calculations according to Alex Nixon’s article on PittsburghLive.com.

Eugene Scanzera, vice president of Medicare for UPMC Health Plan, says Western Pennsylvania is a very competitive landscape for Medicare products.  High growth equals a change in the market share and this is great news for the insurer.  They are getting more than their fair share of growth through their dedication to quality products.

UPMC Health Plan options in UPMC for Life grew in Allegheny county by 11.2% which makes it the third largest Medicare Advantage program in the state.  UPMC and Highmark are among some of the Medicare giants in the state and they are in a battle to dominate the market.  They both have plans in place to make this happen in 2012.  They have different strategies, but both will put up a solid fight to come out on top.  This is likely good news for seniors as the two insurers compete for their business in the Medicare Advantage option.
