Humana Health Insurance Partners With Walmart

Humana Health Insurance has promoted maintaining good health for a long time through a variety of programs and incentives for staying healthy, including more affordable health insurance. They are now taking it a step further by partnering with one of the nation’s largest food providers, Walmart. Humana and Walmart are teaming up to encourage consumers to purchase more nutritious food and make overall healthier choices when grocery shopping according to David A. Starting on October 15th, HumanaVitality and their 1 million members will be able to participate in a new program that offers a 5% savings on products that feature Walmart’s “Great for You” icon. This would include a wide variety of foods including fruits, vegetables, chicken, low-sodium soups and low-fat dairy. This is huge incentive for consumers to buy healthier foods, especially those who think buying healthy food has to be more expensive. This is a very exciting initiative that could have huge results towards a healthier society.

Walmart’s “Great for You” icon will be used to quickly identify which foods are healthy options in addition to saving eligible participants 5%. The Vitality HealthyFood program will be available at Walmart stores nationwide. President of Health and Wellness for Walmart, John Agwunobi, said cost continues to be a barrier to many Americans choosing healthier food items and this effort is the beginning of new ways to offer less expensive alternatives.

This effort is being offered in the name of public health and it couldn’t come at a better time as obesity among Americans is skyrocketing. Healthy eating is important for weight control as well as preventing various illnesses and Agwunobi hopes this is the beginning of ongoing trends. CEO of Humana Vitality, Joe Woods, says this plan offers a new way to decrease America’s health care problems. Members were recently surveyed, and they found that 84% of respondents would be encouraged to buy healthier food through a program such as this.

To become eligible for this program, Humana members need to accept Humana Vitality terms and conditions and take a health assessment on their website. Members will receive a “Vitality HealthyFood” card which will grant participants the 5% discount for foods marked appropriately. As these eligible foods are purchased, credits are added to the card towards future Walmart purchases. This is truly an exciting venture that benefits all parties involved, especially the consumer. Now is the time to take advantage of all the small discounts which can add up over time and support healthier living.
