More Colleges Requiring Health Insurance More and more colleges are requiring their students to carry health insurance and they are giving quality options to make this possible. Michigan State University has recently become the sixth school in the Big Ten to require their students to carry a form of health insurance. This may seem like a harsh requirement but the schools find its in the best interest of the students. Having the appropriate coverage can end up saving them from financial disaster at a young age if something were to happen to them. New students entering the Michigan State University campus for the first time will have the choice to find their own individual or choose to take on their university health insurance plan. They have partnered with Aetna health insurance to coordinate a unique plan designed with students’ needs in mind. MSU spokesperson, Kent Cassella, said the sponsored plan will be very affordable at $1505 a year. This is a great deal that can help protect students’ health while saving them money. Cassella talks about how 29 students filed catastrophic claims with Aetna in January alone and if they weren’t carrying the MSU health insurance coverage they would have received bills for over $25,000. This just goes to show the value of carrying health insurance. Young adults don’t always recognize the importance of carrying health insurance so requiring students to find a policy might be a good idea for all parties involved.
